Top Authentication Agencies Ranked (2024)
The secondary market for autographs is dictated by Third-Party Authentication (TPA). An item is only worth what a buyer believes it is worth, and that belief is driven by the sticker or Letter of Authenticity (LOA) accompanying it.
We evaluate the top four agencies based on primary market acceptance (auction houses) and their internal methodology.
1. PSA/DNA (Professional Sports Authenticator)
Primary Focus: Universal, dominant in sports and trading cards.
PSA/DNA is the undisputed market leader in terms of volume and general market acceptance. Their encapsulation service for signed trading cards is the industry standard.
- Pros: Maximum liquidity. Most auction houses will not question a PSA LOA. Massive exemplar database.
- Cons: High submission costs for premium items. Long turnaround times.
2. JSA (James Spence Authentication)
Primary Focus: Universal, strong in sports, historical, and entertainment.
Founded by James Spence, JSA is considered on par with PSA/DNA for market acceptance in almost all categories.
- Pros: Exceptional reputation for historical and entertainment autographs. Often faster turnaround times than PSA. Universal auction house acceptance.
- Cons: Slab/encapsulation options historically less popular than PSA for cards.
3. BAS (Beckett Authentication Services)
Primary Focus: Universal, strong in modern sports and entertainment.
Steve Grad and Brian Sobrero (formerly of PSA) lead BAS. They have rapidly gained market share, especially in modern entertainment (comic cons, modern pop culture).
- Pros: Highly respected lead authenticators. Excellent encapsulation slabs.
- Cons: Slightly less historical pedigree than PSA/JSA for pre-1900 items, though closing the gap.
4. REAL (Roger Epperson Authentication Ltd.)
Primary Focus: Music (Rock/Pop/Jazz).
Roger Epperson is the acknowledged leading expert in modern music autographs.
- Pros: Unmatched expertise in a niche (music) where the "Big 3" sometimes struggle due to the chaotic nature of rockstar signatures.
- Cons: Niche focus; not a universal authenticator for sports or general history.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if TPAs disagree?
It happens. Authentication is an opinion based on expertise. If PSA fails an item and JSA passes it, the market generally sides with whoever issued the LOA, though the item carries a permanent "stigma" for advanced collectors who check cert databases.
